Helmet Crest (Babanki-Tungo)





Of a classical Babanki style, with rather narrow, long face, big eyes and open mouth which were painted white. The pierced pattern on the cowl of this mask recalls a tarantula, and represents the wool cap worn by princes who were responsible for naming a ruler’s successor.

Hardwood, glossy brown patina,

kaolin traces around eyes and mouth
