FINE LEGA MAGINGA FIGURE. The concave face with raised oval slit eyes, traces of kaolin about the face, short legs, dark patina.
ͣ Lega Maginga statuettes are rarely taller then 35 cm. They were carved mainly out of wood and ivory. Employed during initiation ceremonies, they had a mnemonic function insofar as they assisted in the telling of “ancestor stories” or in the depiction of proverbs.
